QuarkXPress Book
David Blatner, Keith Stimely, Eric Taub In its fourth edition, The QuarkXPress Book for Macintosh is a fixture of Quarkdom—it—it's the book that Quark's technical support staff has to learn cover-to-cover before hitting the phone lines. With new revisions for each version from 3.0 to 3.3 (and a complete rewrite for this edition), the book has matured along with the application.

The writing style is straightforward, presenting QuarkXPress as a set of major concepts, such as printing, type, and typography. Discussions in each chapter center around a particular task. For instance, the book approaches style sheets by first introducing the user to the concept and building a framework to demonstrate the use of style sheets before explaining the creation and other technical, menu, and dialog box-oriented issues.

Both beginners and somewhat experienced users can garner a lot from The QuarkXPress Book for Macintosh; it's rich enough to periodically return to once you've gained more experience with the program.

Final Cut Pro For Macintosh
Lisa Brenneis Final Cut Pro for Macintosh, a member of the Visual QuickPro Guide series from Peachpit Press, is invaluable for any individual learning to use Apple's digital video editing package. Every page is a step-by-step tutorial on how to use the program and how to do specific tasks.

Like other books in this terrific series from Peachpit, each page is divided into two columns, one for text and one for pictures, and there are always pictures. In some cases, the pages are filled with screen shots and very little text.

Every topic on using Final Cut Pro is here, from batch capturing footage from your DV camera to basic editing, adding transitions, titles, special effects, multiple soundtracks, all the way through rendering and playing the movie back to tape. There are even sections on using third-party filters and plug-ins, and creating artwork in other programs for use in Final Cut Pro.

The book doesn't simply cover the use of Final Cut Pro. The opening chapter covers hardware requirements, system configurations, optimizing the system, and troubleshooting questions and answers. An appendix lists online resources and Web sites for getting additional help or finding other Final Cut Pro users.

The goal of Peachpit Press's Visual QuickPro series is to publish useful books at reasonable prices, and they are certainly doing that with books like this. However, none of the books in this series come with a CD-ROM, which is unfortunate. Still, Final Cut Pro is a big, flexible program, and this book can help you digitally visualize your next motion video masterpiece. —Mike Caputo
Final Cut Pro 2 for Macintosh: Visual QuickPro Guide
Lisa Brenneis The strength of Final Cut Pro, Apple's topnotch digital-video editing application, lies in its ease of use. It makes sense, then, that one of the best books on Final Cut is also one of the easiest to read and use. Over 600 pages of step-by-step instruction, the Final Cut Pro 2 for Macintosh: Visual QuickPro Guide can build the skill set of almost any user looking to edit with Final Cut Pro.

No CD-ROM with accompanying materials is included. Instead, the materials that come with Final Cut are used to strengthen and enhance the lessons and concepts in Apple's own manuals. Beginning with an overview of system requirements and configurations, Brenneis plunges into the Final Cut interface and the first steps in setting up and using the application.

The chapters are structured as if a real project were in production: importing video, preparing the clips, editing, adding transitions, and rendering for final output. Tips and tricks are sprinkled like gold nuggets throughout the book, offering insight on how an experienced professional might take advantage of a particular feature.

Lisa Brenneis is no stranger to editing or writing—her first book on Final Cut Pro was a huge success and became a yardstick against which others were judged. With the release of Final Cut Pro 2, she has updated and enhanced her book to cover the new features. Look for her newest title, on the third revision of FCP, soon: Final Cut Pro 3 for Macintosh: Visual QuickPro Guide.

Like all books in the series, Final Cut Pro 2 for Macintosh: Visual QuickPro Guide is concise, complete, and easy on the eyes: it's laid out in a clear two-column format with countless screen shots. Books in this series are designed to get the professional user up and running fast, and this installment reaches that goal. For anyone teaching or learning Final Cut Pro, this is an invaluable book. —Mike Caputo

Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap... and Others Don't
Jim Collins Five years ago, Jim Collins asked the question, "Can a good company become a great company and if so, how?" In Good to Great Collins, the author of Built to Last, concludes that it is possible, but finds there are no silver bullets. Collins and his team of researchers began their quest by sorting through a list of 1,435 companies, looking for those that made substantial improvements in their performance over time. They finally settled on 11—including Fannie Mae, Gillette, Walgreens, and Wells Fargo—and discovered common traits that challenged many of the conventional notions of corporate success. Making the transition from good to great doesn't require a high-profile CEO, the latest technology, innovative change management, or even a fine-tuned business strategy. At the heart of those rare and truly great companies was a corporate culture that rigorously found and promoted disciplined people to think and act in a disciplined manner. Peppered with dozens of stories and examples from the great and not so great, the book offers a well-reasoned road map to excellence that any organization would do well to consider. Like Built to Last, Good to Great is one of those books that managers and CEOs will be reading and rereading for years to come. —Harry C. Edwards

Flash Web Design
Hillman Curtis Learning from the best is always a good idea, especially when the best in the field is adept at explaining his methods. In Flash Web Design, Hillman Curtis, a renowned Web developer (particularly in motion graphics) walks you through nine enlightening Flash projects in order of increasing complexity.

Curtis calls these exercises "deconstructions," and it's an apt term. All the finished pieces can be viewed on Curtis's site (www.hillmancurtis.com/book). With his help, you reconstruct each Flash movie with no step overlooked. They range from type animation (Macromedia Shockzone) to his bandwidth-skinny (20K) navigational, an interactive media site created with action scripting, a streaming visual poem with MP3 audio and many other techniques. The spots are all aesthetically elegant, vibrant, and cutting-edge in terms of design and typography and are even a pleasure to work with.

The author is first and foremost a designer. The book demonstrates the importance of conceptualizing the clients' needs and how to preplan and storyboard the projects. It documents the motivations behind even the smallest design decisions, making this book valuable as a teaching tool and not just a grab bag of hotshot how-tos. Each project takes time, but even beginners can re-create the Flash movies. The steps are clearly explained and illustrated with screen shots. The artwork, however, is not provided. To work along with the deconstructions, readers will have to create similar art, film, and sound files.

Those aware of Hillman Curtis's work will also be familiar with that of the book's designer, Todd Purgason of Juxt Interactive (juxtinteractive.com). The layout for Flash Web Design evokes the layered, motion-through-structure style of Purgason's Web design (lundstromarch.com) and makes one wish the book also existed in movie format. In fact, Purgason's methodology is presented in the last chapter, where he shows the benefits of using Freehand in conjunction with Flash. —Angelynn Grant

Topics covered: Step-by-step case studies re-create existing Flash projects that range in complexity. Projects include type animation, navigational screens, working with wireframe art, converting vectorized video, working with streaming MP3 audio, using action scripting for interactivity, and going from Freehand sketches to finished Flash movies.

The Second Coming of Steve Jobs
Alan Deutschman For the legions who revere Apple Computer's high-profile cofounder as a godlike figure, the aptly titled Second Coming of Steve Jobs will prove an intriguing picture of a seminal time in their deity's roller-coaster life. It should emphatically vindicate their deeply held faith in the man and his ideas. But even for those with a lesser opinion, Alan Deutschman offers an interesting and enlightening look at the crucial period from Jobs's unceremonious Apple exit through his triumphant return. Deutschman, a contributing editor at Vanity Fair magazine and longtime Silicon Valley correspondent, interviewed nearly 100 colleagues and friends to draw this portrait of a bewilderingly complex and notoriously private man—albeit one whose talents, personality traits, and idiosyncrasies have long been on public display. "He succeeded in becoming the Jackie Kennedy Onassis of business and technology," Deutschman writes, "a figure who was ubiquitous as a symbol of his times but little known as a human being." To change that, he looks into Jobs's ill-fated first post-Apple endeavor at the Next computer company, his return to undeniable respectability with Pixar and the two Toy Story movies, and finally, his ultimate absolution with a very successful reclamation of the Apple crown. It's a revealing account of a singular individual during a remarkable time. —Howard Rothman

This superb film from Pixar Studios, the people who brought you Toy Story, A Bug's Life, and Toy Story 2, reveals the truth about monsters with the brilliant techniques that have earned them their reputation as a ground-breaking animation studio. This incredible body of artwork was commissioned from the top artists, illustrators, and animators in the industry and from it the ultimate visual approach of the film was defined. From sketches scribbled on napkins and quickly inked marker drawings, to finished oil paintings and fabulous pastel color scripts, this behind-the-scenes artwork reveals the elaborate creative process behind a blockbuster film.

The Mac Internet Tour Guide: Cruising the Internet the Easy Way
Michael Fraase
Aretha From These Roots
Aretha Franklin, David Ritz Unlike the soul-baring performances that have drawn listeners to her for four decades, Aretha Franklin is a bit cagey when it comes to discussing her personal life in her autobiography, From These Roots. The famously press-shy Aretha is a free-speaking anecdote spinner and a blunt sharer of opinions of coworkers and fellow artists. (Don't get her started on Natalie Cole.) But some areas remain blurry; for instance, her troubled first marriage to a temperamental music-business figure named Ted White is covered in only a tiny handful of pages. Other happier memories of lovers and of her late father, the famed minister Rev. C.L. Franklin, find her in a more expansive mood. Most consistently indelible in this telling, though, is her musical story. Born in 1942, she grew up around some of the century's greatest singers—Clara Ward, Dinah Washington, and Sam Cooke were all family friends. A voice that many consider the world's finest, a strikingly individual touch on piano, and an eclectic ear for material combined to make her a notable artist who moved quickly from the gospel circuit to Columbia Records and moderate success in a variety of contexts, from show tunes to a gritty tribute to Washington. Her reminiscences of those days, and of the conquests that followed when she moved to the forefront of the soul revolution after signing to Atlantic, are obviously still fresh for her. A formidable presence even in her 20s, Aretha continues to be a daunting figure. While From These Roots isn't as splashy a triumph as her 1967 Atlantic debut or her house-rocking at the 1998 Grammys with a rendition of Puccini's "Nessun dorma," the book does make for an irresistible reflection on a singular woman and her art. —Rickey Wright
Digital Landscape Photography
Tim Gartside "Digital Landscape Photography" looks exclusively at the art of landscape photography, focusing on the stages between image capture and output. Techniques for creating impressive landscape photographs are described and illustrated in detail. It also shows how landscape effects can be achieved through software manipulation of film camera images which have been scanned into a computer. Concentrating on image manipulation, the book underlines the importance of good composition and general photography concepts. It is aimed at those new to photography, enticed by the falling prices of basic, but efficient, digital cameras. With a full-color, portrait layout, this book truly brings its images to life.

In fact, when you first flip quickly through the book, gobbling up all the creative ideas and timesaving tips, his sly jokes only add to the I've-just-hit-the-lottery feeling.

Whatever you're looking for—type that looks distressed, made of gel, or carved in stone; shadows in perspective or in motion; text that wraps around a globe; a glinting starburst on the edge of an object; a logo artificially placed at the bottom of a pool; or a starry sky created in an instant—just about every trick is here. And most are done in 10 steps or less. Also, each page has a Quick Tip sidebar (there're over 200 of them) that are worth the price of the book alone, with everything from getting better results from your eyedropper tool (click on Options and change the Point Sample to "3 by 3 average") to the quickest way to change units of measurement (the secret is in the Info palette).

The book has been updated since the previous edition with mostly new illustrations, many new and better ways to perform the same tricks, and a few completely new ones. Project files and images can be downloaded from the book's companion Web site at downanddirtytricks.com. Although aimed at experienced Photoshop users, the text is detailed enough for readers of all levels. For example, steps like "make a copy of that layer by dragging it to the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers palette" or "press the letter m to switch to the Rectangular Marquee tool" are repeated in full whenever a trick calls for them. This not only helps beginners, it allows all readers to hop around the book and be able to carry out any trick in any order. Yet another reason this book could've been titled Speedy Down & Dirty Tricks. —Angelynn Grant
The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers
Scott Kelby Some people make their living with a camera, and for these people the maturation of digital photo technology means a significant shift in their trade. The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers is for people who are already adept with a camera, and pretty much up to speed on the peculiarities of digital photography, too. The book teaches these people how to use Adobe Photoshop, the standard photo-editing software package. More accurately, the book explains how to use Photoshop for the kinds of work professional photographers do.

Case in point: The removal from photographs of what are politely called skin blemishes. Author Scott Kelby (the editor of Photoshop User offers two strategies: One you can use to remove all traces of a mark but which requires a fair amount of time, and another procedure that delivers "pretty good" results and which can be done on many pictures (such as a set of class portraits) rapidly. Kelby teaches by means of heavily illustrated procedures, each between five and 20 steps long and spanning several pages. A good way to use this book is by scanning the table of contents for a procedure that interests you (say, "Fixing Underexposed Photos," or "Pro Wrinkle Removal"). This will enable you to spot Photoshop techniques you hadn't considered. —David Wall

Topics covered: How to use Adobe Photoshop if, for you, the program is one tool out of many in a photographic kit. Tricks teach you how to recolor hair, whiten teeth and eyes, modify unflattering body contours, dodge and burn, apply filters for effect, assemble panoramas, and do a score of other slick photo jobs.
The Photoshop Elements Book for Digital Photographers
Scott Kelby Scott Kelby offers full-color, graphically rich, linear, tutorial- and project-based examples of every key step in the digital photography process. From experimenting with camera settings, through capturing and manipulating the image, through editing, output and organization, this book is designed for the digital photographer who knows aesthetics but who wants a concise guide to "grip it and rip it" usage of digital technology. Photoshop Elements is a very powerful and affordable image editing software. It carries many of the same features Photoshop does without the complicated graphs and tools. It also carries it all at a much less expensive price tag - only $99, compared Photoshop's $600. Anyone making the transition from film to digital photography will learn the stuff that is critical for Photoshop Elements — no theory, no challenging the readers to come up with their own settings. This book shows the readers exactly "how to do it."

Scott Kelby is President of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP), and is Editor-in-chief of both Photoshop User and Mac Design magazines. Throughout the year, Scott serves as Training Director for the Adobe Photoshop Seminar Tour and is technical chair of the largest Photoshop gathering, Photoshop World. Scott is one of the leading Photoshop trainers in the country today and trains thousands of Photoshop users across the country each year, and is featured in a series of Photoshop training videos. He has written 6 best-selling books on Photoshop and on digital photography.

The Digital Photography Book, Volume 2
Scott Kelby Scott Kelby, author of the groundbreaking bestseller “The Digital Photography Book, Vol. 1” is back with an entirely new book that picks up right where Vol. 1 left off. It’s more of that “Ah ha—so that’s how they do it,” straight-to-the-point, skip the techno jargon; packed with stuff you can really use today, that made Vol. 1 the world’s bestselling book on digital photography.

This book truly has a brilliant premise, and here’s how Scott describes it: “If you and I were out on a shoot, and you asked me, ‘When I use my flash, the background behind the person I’m shooting turns black. How do I fix that?’ I wouldn’t give you a lecture on flash ratios, or start a discussion on flash synchronization and rear curtain sync. I’d just say “Lower your shutter speed to 1/60 of a second. That should do it” Well, that’s what this book is all about: you and I out shooting where I answer questions, give you advice, and share the secrets I’ve learned just like I would with a friend—without all the technical explanations and techie photo speak.”

MCSE : TCP/IP for NT Server 4 Study Guide
Todd Lammle, Monica Lammle, James Chellis A popular elective on the road to Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) certification and a requirement of the MCSE + Internet rating, Microsoft's TCP/IP exam (70-059) tests many aspects of Windows NT and open Internet protocols. MCSE: TCP/IP for NT Server 4 Study Guide helps you get clear about how Windows NT implements TCP/IP. As do all the Sybex MCSE books, this one includes plenty of exam-like multiple-choice questions you can use to identify weak points in your Windows NT knowledge.

The authors of MCSE: TCP/IP for NT Server 4 Study Guide present more than facts, choosing to back up "hard" material with analogies, exercises, and other supplementary prose. It's important to note that they do cover all the subjects that appear on the TCP/IP exam—they use Microsoft's guidelines as a means of organization. Whether the supplementary material is a help or a hindrance depends on your learning style.

If you're an MCSE candidate in search of a sparer style, you might be happier with a different TCP/IP preparation book; but if you prefer readable prose and experiments in addition to lists of facts, you'll appreciate the authors' approach here. If you don't want to haul a book around at all, you will benefit from the quiz programs on the two CD-ROMs that accompany the book. —David Wall
Mac OS 8.5
Maria Langer Whether you're running an iMac with the latest version of Mac OS or you've just performed a system upgrade on your older machine, you need to understand Mac OS 8.5. This book shows you how to get the most out of your Mac's operating system.

Maria Langer starts with the easy stuff—she shows how to click icons, use menus, and dispose of files by dragging them to the Trash. For that reason, Mac OS 8.5 fits the needs of newcomers to the Mac community. However, she doesn't dwell long on the basics and storms straight ahead through spring-loaded folders, application management, and printing. A large portion of this book explains how to connect a Macintosh running Mac OS 8.5 to the Internet and to LANs. The newest features of the system, including the Sherlock search tool, receive careful coverage.

Mac OS 8.5 features careful design. It's easy to locate the pages that contain the solution to your problem. By turning the book sideways and scanning the tabs on the edges of the pages, you can quickly spot relevant passages. Page design stands out, too—numerous screen shots surrounded by bulleted text nuggets clarify how to get things done in Mac OS 8.5, without requiring you to spend too much time poring over dense prose. —David Wall
Mac OS X
Maria Langer Apple's Unix-based, industrial-strength operating system, OS X, is the biggest change ever faced by the Mac community. OS X looks different, feels different, offers new and different features, and is an order of magnitude more complex than any previous Mac operating system. Maria Langer's Mac OS X Visual QuickStart Guide from Peachpit Press is designed to quell the fears of those apprehensive users who are looking to make the switch, or have just switched and find themselves lost in a new world.

Starting with the best way to prepare your computer for OS X, and working it's way through installation and the interface changes, this book covers almost every basic aspect of the new operating system. Navigating with the new Finder, application basics, hooking up to the Internet—it—it's all here, in simple, concise terms.

If the book has a flaw, it is that only the bare basics are covered. Everything presented is clear and thorough, but there is not enough material. There is nothing about access rights, logging in or logging out, or getting around basic issues that might pop up. The book lays things out as they should be but offers little advice for those times when something goes wrong.

Since Mac OS X ships with minimal hardcopy documentation, the Mac OS X Visual QuickStart Guide is an ideal companion for the new user making the switch. There is plenty of information here, presented clearly and with countless screenshots. For the brand-new user looking for a well-illustrated manual, this is the one that Apple should ship with OS X. —Mike Caputo
The Internet for Dummies
John R. Levine, Carol Baroudi, Margaret Levine Young, John Levine Even if you're not a dummy, the sixth edition of The Internet for Dummies is one of the best user's guides to the Internet now available. Many so-called Internet books are nothing more than printed collections of Web addresses, but John Levine, Carol Baroudi, and Margaret Levine Young recognize that deciding to use the Internet involves financial commitments and computer-hardware decisions as much as it does looking at neat pictures. That said, don't expect to set up your own e-commerce site with this book, and don't expect to find step-by-step instructions for starting your computer. But do expect to get some good advice about picking an ISP (Internet Service Provider), protecting your privacy (and your kids), and connecting with Windows or a Mac. The authors also do an exceptional job of explaining such terms as PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) and what it is for, and they even talk about the old Unix shell account (with a Lynx text browser) for those not getting a PPP account. You'll find tips for optimizing your browser for speed, building your first Web page, managing e-mail, subscribing to mailing lists, and, yes, shopping. What is most impressive, however, is the balanced approach the authors take in evaluating Web sites (they do give some Web addresses), online services, and browser software. They offer the pros and cons and let you sort it out. They also include their own Web address so you can look for updates to the book and check on their latest favorites. —Patrick O'Kelley
Sams Teach Yourself iMac in 10 Minutes
Rita Lewis Rita Lewis's Teach Yourself iMac in 10 Minutes is a quick book but is not necessarily a beginner's book. In fact, the ideal audience is probably a current (or former) Mac user who is just now entering the iMac world. Much of the text, organized in bite-sized portions, describes how things are different from previous incarnations of the Mac operating system, and it reveals countless new features (like Sherlock's indexing and searching of file content as well as file names) that a former Centris user, for example, would never imagine. Lewis also offers a few tricks for dealing with the iMac's lack of an external floppy, customizing the desktop and software, installing peripherals, and troubleshooting. Though little time is spent defining terms or orienting readers who are first-time computer buyers (what is backside cache, anyway?), the numerous screen shots and step-by-step guides are helpful once you've got your machine up and running. The text may not be comprehensive as a reference guide, but Teach Yourself iMac in 10 Minutes is perfect for getting up to speed with all the major features that the iMac has to offer. —Patrick O'Kelley
Apple Confidential 2.0: The Definitive History of the World's Most Colorful Company
Owen Linzmayer, Owen W. Linzmayer Owen Linzmayer's Apple Confidential is subtitled The Real Story of Apple Computer, Inc., and while nobody will ever know the complete, "real" story about Apple, Linzmayer's is probably as close as they come. Having covered Apple news since 1980, he offers extensive insider details about Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, John Sculley, Gilbert Amelio, Bill Gates, and other major players whose lives were (and are) intertwined with Apple's history. And along the way, we also learn about lesser-known figures whose stories have remained hidden in the Apple myth: Ronald Gerald Wayne, for example, who was actually a partner with Wozniak and Jobs in the original incarnation of the company, but who sold his share when he realized he would be financially vulnerable if it should fail.

Linzmayer's tale does have a few drawbacks. Because he mixes a chronological narrative with chapters that focus on key points in the Apple story, he sometimes repeats himself. Case in point: the chapter "Big Bad Blunders" makes a great record of Apple's failures, but the story of the exploding Powerbook 5300s is duplicated at later points. Nonetheless, Apple Confidential is rife with gems that will appeal to Apple fanatics and followers of the computer industry. Especially enjoyable are the revelation of "Easter eggs" that are hidden in several versions of the Mac operating system; the many screen shots, timelines, and telling quotes from Jobs, Gates, Wozniak and others that populate the margins and concluding sections of each chapter; the "Code Names Uncovered" section that makes public the monikers of several secret Apple projects; and Bill Gates's 1985 letter to John Sculley and Jean Louis Gassee pleading for Apple to license Mac technology and develop a "standard personal computer." —Patrick O'Kelley
Fish! Sticks: A Remarkable Way to Adapt to Changing Times and Keep Your Work Fresh
Stephen C. Lundin, John Christensen, Harry Paul In this third installment in the popular Fish! series, the authors examine change as a necessary, ongoing process that should never stop—at least not if one wants to keep the workplace vital and fully alive. Using a fictitious sushi restaurant as an example, this fable examines the three principles that Lundin, Christensen, and Paul believe are necessary for continuing success: Find It ("it" being each employee's personal vision of the business), Live It, and Coach It. Readers of the authors' previous books—Fish! A Remarkable Way to Boost Morale and Improve Results and Fish! Tales—should find its familiarity comforting. For those new to the series, this standalone volume is easy to read and highly valuable. —David Bombeck
Fish! A Remarkable Way to Boost Morale and Improve Results
Stephen C. Lundin, Harry Paul, John Christensen Here's another management parable that draws its lesson from an unlikely source—this time it's the fun-loving fishmongers at Seattle's Pike Place Market. In Fish! the heroine, Mary Jane Ramirez, recently widowed and mother of two, is asked to engineer a turnaround of her company's troubled operations department, a group that authors Stephen Lundin, Harry Paul, and John Christensen describe as a "toxic energy dump." Most reasonable heads would cut their losses and move on. Why bother with this bunch of losers? But the authors don't make it so easy for Mary Jane. Instead, she's left to sort out this mess with the help of head fishmonger Lonnie. Based on a bestselling corporate education video, Fish! aims to help employees find their way to a fun and happy workplace. While some may find the story line and prescriptions—such as "Choose Your Attitude," "Make Their Day," and "Be Present"—downright corny, others will find a good dose of worthwhile motivational management techniques. If you loved Who Moved My Cheese? then you'll find much to like here. And don't worry about Mary Jane and kids. Fish! has a happy ending for everyone. —Harry C. Edwards

The Art of Deception: Controlling the Human Element of Security
Kevin D. Mitnick, William L. Simon The Art of Deception is about gaining someone's trust by lying to them and then abusing that trust for fun and profit. Hackers use the euphemism "social engineering" and hacker-guru Kevin Mitnick examines many example scenarios.

After Mitnick's first dozen examples anyone responsible for organizational security is going to lose the will to live. It's been said before, but people and security are antithetical. Organizations exist to provide a good or service and want helpful, friendly employees to promote the good or service. People are social animals who want to be liked. Controlling the human aspects of security means denying someone something. This circle can't be squared.

Considering Mitnick's reputation as a hacker guru, it's ironic that the last point of attack for hackers using social engineering are computers. Most of the scenarios in The Art of Deception work just as well against computer-free organizations and were probably known to the Phoenicians; technology simply makes it all easier. Phones are faster than letters, after all, and having large organizations means dealing with lots of strangers.

Much of Mitnick's security advice sounds practical until you think about implementation, when you realize that more effective security means reducing organizational efficiency—an impossible trade in competitive business. And anyway, who wants to work in an organization where the rule is "Trust no one"? Mitnick shows how easily security is breached by trust, but without trust people can't live and work together. In the real world, effective organizations have to acknowledge that total security is a chimera—and carry more insurance. —Steve Patient, amazon.co.uk
The Art of Intrusion: The Real Stories Behind the Exploits of Hackers, Intruders & Deceivers
Kevin D. Mitnick, William L. Simon Hacker extraordinaire Kevin Mitnick delivers the explosive encore to his bestselling The Art of Deception
Kevin Mitnick, the world's most celebrated hacker, now devotes his life to helping businesses and governments combat data thieves, cybervandals, and other malicious computer intruders. In his bestselling The Art of Deception, Mitnick presented fictionalized case studies that illustrated how savvy computer crackers use "social engineering" to compromise even the most technically secure computer systems. Now, in his new book, Mitnick goes one step further, offering hair-raising stories of real-life computer break-ins-and showing how the victims could have prevented them. Mitnick's reputation within the hacker community gave him unique credibility with the perpetrators of these crimes, who freely shared their stories with him-and whose exploits Mitnick now reveals in detail for the first time, including:A group of friends who won nearly a million dollars in Las Vegas by reverse-engineering slot machinesTwo teenagers who were persuaded by terrorists to hack into the Lockheed Martin computer systemsTwo convicts who joined forces to become hackers inside a Texas prisonA "Robin Hood" hacker who penetrated the computer systems of many prominent companies-andthen told them how he gained accessWith riveting "you are there" descriptions of real computer break-ins, indispensable tips on countermeasures security professionals need to implement now, and Mitnick's own acerbic commentary on the crimes he describes, this book is sure to reach a wide audience-and attract the attention of both law enforcement agencies and the media.

Photoshop in a Nutshell
Donnie O'Quinn, Matt LeClair This book does well what it purports to do, providing a quick reference to the myriad tools in Adobe Photoshop 4 for Windows and Macintosh. It doesn't try to take you through broad procedures, such as applying filters and color-correcting images, as many other Photoshop books do. Rather, it defines and describes each option so you'll know when and why you'll need it. The book first delves into tools—those items on the toolbar, such as selection, paint, type, view, color control, and quick-mask tools. Next the writers explore all options on the menus, from the File menu to the View menu. The third and final section covers options on the Navigator, Info, Color, Swatches, Brushes, Layers, Channels, Paths, and Actions palettes. Several screen shots of dialog boxes and images help you understand the tool under discussion. An appendix covers techniques in applying some of the tools, such as transforming type and creating curved lines. Another offers Photoshop keyboard shortcuts for both Macintosh and Windows users.

Photoshop in a Nutshell is best suited for those who already know the basics, and it provides a wealth of documentation-like detail that even expert users may not necessarily have at their fingertips. In addition to outlining the correct use of a particular tool, each section focuses on common problems and errors, something that can be a huge time saver. All in all, this is a no-nonsense book that does an excellent job of deepening the reader's understanding of this complex program. —Kathleen Caster

Mac OS X: The Missing Manual, Second Edition
David Pogue Mac OS X: The Missing Manual ranks among the best books to have at your side as you explore the latest Macintosh operating system as an everyday user who wants to get some work done, have a bit of fun, and feel part of the Mac community. David Pogue—a respected Mac authority and longtime author on the subject—is the perfect guide on such a quest, as his Mac knowledge is profound and his ability to explain facts and procedures considerable. The second edition of this popular book covers Mac OS X 10.2 and all of its many new features, including Sherlock 3, iCal, iSync, and firewalling. There's coverage of .Mac online services, as well.

Pogue writes really well, so his prose is a treat to read and most readers will appreciate his occasional page-long straight prose passages. More often, though, the wisdom in this book comes in the form of annotated procedures and bulleted lists, as well as notes and tips. There are also two highly handy "Where'd It Go?" glossaries: one for longtime Mac users (this one answers such questions as where the Apple Extras folder is) and one for Windows users (to explain, for example, the equivalent of Ctrl-Alt-Delete on the Mac). Unlike most books about Mac OS X, this one explores its UNIX-like underpinnings (the Apple implementation is called Darwin) pretty thoroughly. However, based on the logic that if you wanted to use UNIX, you would, Pogue emphasizes the traditional, graphical Mac interface over the Terminal window. If you want an in-depth treatment of Darwin and know something about UNIX already, have a look at Mac OS X for Unix Geeks. —David Wall

Topics covered: How to use Mac OS X 10.2 and its immediate predecessors. This is a user-level book, concerned with managing files, folders, media, users, and hardware. Lots of attention goes to the operating system's special features, including the "i" series of applications and the .Mac online services.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
J. K. Rowling The long-awaited, eagerly anticipated, arguably over-hyped Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has arrived, and the question on the minds of kids, adults, fans, and skeptics alike is, "Is it worth the hype?" The answer, luckily, is simple: yep. A magnificent spectacle more than worth the price of admission, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will blow you away. However, given that so much has gone into protecting the secrets of the book (including armored trucks and injunctions), don't expect any spoilers in this review. It's much more fun not knowing what's coming—and in the case of Rowling's delicious sixth book, you don't want to know. Just sit tight, despite the earth-shattering revelations that will have your head in your hands as you hope the words will rearrange themselves into a different story. But take one warning to heart: do not open Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince until you have first found a secluded spot, safe from curious eyes, where you can tuck in for a good long read. Because once you start, you won't stop until you reach the very last page.

A darker book than any in the series thus far with a level of sophistication belying its genre, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince moves the series into murkier waters and marks the arrival of Rowling onto the adult literary scene. While she has long been praised for her cleverness and wit, the strength of Book 6 lies in her subtle development of key characters, as well as her carefully nuanced depiction of a community at war. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, no one and nothing is safe, including preconceived notions of good and evil and of right and wrong. With each book in her increasingly remarkable series, fans have nervously watched J.K. Rowling raise the stakes; gone are the simple delights of butterbeer and enchanted candy, and days when the worst ailment could be cured by a bite of chocolate. A series that began as a colorful lark full of magic and discovery has become a dark and deadly war zone. But this should not come as a shock to loyal readers. Rowling readied fans with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by killing off popular characters and engaging the young students in battle. Still, there is an unexpected bleakness from the start of Book 6 that casts a mean shadow over Quidditch games, silly flirtations, and mountains of homework. Ready or not, the tremendous ending of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will leave stunned fans wondering what great and terrible events await in Book 7 if this sinister darkness is meant to light the way. —Daphne Durham

Why We Love Harry
Favorite Moments from the Series
There are plenty of reasons to love Rowling's wildly popular series—no doubt you have several dozen of your own. Our list features favorite moments, characters, and artifacts from the first five books. Keep in mind that this list is by no means exhaustive (what we love about Harry could fill ten books!) and does not include any of the spectacular revelatory moments that would spoil the books for those (few) who have not read them. Enjoy.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
* Harry's first trip to the zoo with the Dursleys, when a boa constrictor winks at him.
* When the Dursleys' house is suddenly besieged by letters for Harry from Hogwarts. Readers learn how much the Dursleys have been keeping from Harry. Rowling does a wonderful job in displaying the lengths to which Uncle Vernon will go to deny that magic exists.
* Harry's first visit to Diagon Alley with Hagrid. Full of curiosities and rich with magic and marvel, Harry's first trip includes a trip to Gringotts and Ollivanders, where Harry gets his wand (holly and phoenix feather) and discovers yet another connection to He-Who-Must-No-Be-Named. This moment is the reader's first full introduction to Rowling's world of witchcraft and wizards.
* Harry's experience with the Sorting Hat.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
* The de-gnoming of the Weasleys' garden. Harry discovers that even wizards have chores—gnomes must be grabbed (ignoring angry protests "Gerroff me! Gerroff me!"), swung about (to make them too dizzy to come back), and tossed out of the garden—this delightful scene highlights Rowling's clever and witty genius.
* Harry's first experience with a Howler, sent to Ron by his mother.
* The Dueling Club battle between Harry and Malfoy. Gilderoy Lockhart starts the Dueling Club to help students practice spells on each other, but he is not prepared for the intensity of the animosity between Harry and Draco. Since they are still young, their minibattle is innocent enough, including tickling and dancing charms.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
* Ron's attempt to use a telephone to call Harry at the Dursleys'.
* Harry's first encounter with a Dementor on the train (and just about any other encounter with Dementors). Harry's brush with the Dementors is terrifying and prepares Potter fans for a darker, scarier book.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's behavior in Professor Trelawney's Divination class. Some of the best moments in Rowling's books occur when she reminds us that the wizards-in-training at Hogwarts are, after all, just children. Clearly, even at a school of witchcraft and wizardry, classes can be boring and seem pointless to children.
* The Boggart lesson in Professor Lupin's classroom.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's knock-down confrontation with Snape.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
* Hermione's disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling's fourth book addresses issues about growing up—the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them.
* Viktor Krum's crush on Hermione—and Ron's objection to it.
* Malfoy's "Potter Stinks" badge.
* Hermione's creation of S.P.E.W., the intolerant bigotry of the Death Eaters, and the danger of the Triwizard Tournament. Add in the changing dynamics between girls and boys at Hogwarts, and suddenly Rowling's fourth book has a weight and seriousness not as present in early books in the series. Candy and tickle spells are left behind as the students tackle darker, more serious issues and take on larger responsibilities, including the knowledge of illegal curses.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

* Harry's outburst to his friends at No. 12 Grimmauld Place. A combination of frustration over being kept in the dark and fear that he will be expelled fuels much of Harry's anger, and it all comes out at once, directly aimed at Ron and Hermione. Rowling perfectly portrays Harry's frustration at being too old to shirk responsibility, but too young to be accepted as part of the fight that he knows is coming.
* Harry's detention with Professor Umbridge. Rowling shows her darker side, leading readers to believe that Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for young wizards. Dolores represents a bureaucratic tyrant capable of real evil, and Harry is forced to endure their private battle of wills alone.
* Harry and Cho's painfully awkward interactions. Rowling clearly remembers what it was like to be a teenager.
* Harry's Occlumency lessons with Snape.
* Dumbledore's confession to Harry.

Magic, Mystery, and Mayhem: A Conversation with J.K. Rowling

"I am an extraordinarily lucky person, doing what I love best in the world. I'm sure that I will always be a writer. It was wonderful enough just to be published. The greatest reward is the enthusiasm of the readers." —J.K. Rowling

A Few Words from Mary GrandPré

"When I illustrate a cover or a book, I draw upon what the author tells me; that's how I see my responsibility as an illustrator. J.K. Rowling is very descriptive in her writing—she gives an illustrator a lot to work with. Each story is packed full of rich visual descriptions of the atmosphere, the mood, the setting, and all the different creatures and people. She makes it easy for me. The images just develop as I sketch and retrace until it feels right and matches her vision." Check out more Harry Potter art from illustrator Mary GrandPré.
Giant Book of Insults
Louis A. Safian Here is a lively collection of sharp retorts and ripostes, pithy pot-shots, caustic quips and polite and not-so-polite putdowns. This unique compendium of ready wit and rapid-fire repartee can be read just for the sheer fiendish fun of it. Or it can be put to work as a handy reference/sourcebook for speakers, writers, entertainers, or managers.
Flash ActionScript f/x and Design
William B. Sanders ActionScripting in a Flash movie can mean the difference between a simple animation and a fully interactive game or interface. If you have used Flash 4 or 5's basic actions and now feel ready to expand your arsenal of coding, this would be the book for you. This conversational collection of tutorials and .fla walk-throughs is particularly suited to Web developers who come from a visual rather than a programming background. Flash fans fluent in C++, or even just JavaScript, may find it too elementary and slow-paced.

However, it is just those qualities that make Flash ActionScript F/X and Design an ideal starting point for script-wary Web designers. Author Sanders is a college professor, and his text has just the right amount of guidance to simulate a one-on-one with an experienced teacher. The many projects and miniprojects ("learning utilities"), all of which are provided on the companion CD-ROM, reflect lessons that range from working with conditionals and operators, handling events, and calling functions to passing data among ActionScript, JavaScript, and HTML. These projects take the form of a quotation guessing game, a drag-and-drop shopping cart, and an interactive cartoon by renowned retro font designer and cartoonist (and Betty Boop expert) Leslie Carbarga. Each project provides a good launching point for applying what's covered in the text.

Caveats: If you are completely new to Flash, this book will be too fast for you. It's also not quite a good fit for Flash-experienced users who are pressed for time and need a quick reference, although it does include a nice glossary of actions, operators, functions, and properties. It's also important to note that XML is outside the scope of this book. However, as an introduction to OOP (object-oriented programming) in general and Flash 5 ActionScripting in particular, this is an excellent choice. —Angelynn Grant
Flash 5 f/x and Design
William B. Sanders Flash 5 f/x and Design helps Web Designers create aesthetically pleasing, interactive web sites. Animation, tweening, using the timeline, coordinating sounds, shape, color, scenes, movement, and sequences, as well as scripting actions and interfaces are covered. Readers gain an understanding of Flash's underlying conceptual framework for creating movies. This book includes a CD-ROM with Flash files, sample photos, and professionally created drawings which readers can incorporate into their movies.

This transition from film to digital, however, creates new challenges and new opportunities for photographers. GoLive 5 f/x and Design
Richard Schrand Adobe's GoLive version 5 offers a rich feature set for the contemporary Web site designer, but only if he or she knows how to make the most of it. GoLive 5 f/x & Design explores those features—with examples, tips, and a generous amount of screen shots—and provides a solid foundation for learning this robust development tool.

Spanning four sections and 15 chapters, the book explores every aspect of GoLive—starting with a discussion of the application itself and how it works. Next are examples on using advanced features like forms, cascading style sheets, and animated graphics and DHTML. The book concludes with the construction of a site, from start to finish, using most of the advanced features that GoLive supports. At each point, the author offers explanations and background information, not only on the feature or function at hand, but also on how to approach some design issues, and how to plan ahead for the task at hand.

A highlight of the book is "The Creative Group Environment" section. Large, contemporary sites rarely are built by one person, but instead by a team of talented individuals. GoLive includes a number of features to facilitate this kind of team approach, and this section offers a clear explanation, as well as a tutorial on the approach of GoLive 5 to team Web development.

Although this book is oriented towards the new GoLive 5 user, there is information here that even intermediate to advanced users will make use of. The accompanying CD also includes handy bonus applications, as well as all of the project files and elements that are used throughout the book. Mac users will appreciate the copy of TextureMagic from Artisoft, for creating seamless tiled backgrounds, and Peak LE from Bias, a sound-editing tool.

Clean writing, clear explanations, and concise examples make this book a valuable addition to the GoLive 5 user's library. —Mike Caputo
Nerds 2.0.1
Stephen Segaller Nerds 2.0.1: A Brief History of the Internet presents the development of the Web as a product of colliding, dualistic forces: the individuality of the personal computer and the universality of a global network. Along the way, other complementary opposites arise, such as the intersection of the "computer lib" hippie hacker and the IBM or Pentagon bureaucrat. The biographies of these visionaries, and the magnificent changes their ideas induced, make Nerds 2.0.1 compelling reading.

Nerds 2.0.1 is a unique computer-history book, in that it is really a history of networking. Author Stephen Segaller covers all the current heavy hitters of the technology industry in depth: Novell, 3Com, and Cisco. In particular, the story of the creation of Cisco—and the ousting of the original founders by the sponsoring venture capitalist—shows the high-level stakes and intrigue this billionaire world holds. Segaller also chronicles the failures of companies who didn't realize what their programmers had made available to them. IBM, Xerox, and, some would say, Microsoft are big players in this part of Segaller's tale.

The author puts technological developments in a helpful context: the infamous 100-hour Silicon Valley workweek, the "dog-year" life span of an Internet start-up, and the managerial shufflings of a sponsoring venture capitalist firm all make sense in the world he describes. —Jennifer Buckendorff

Software Engineering
Ian Sommerville The new edition of this best-selling book provides a comprehensive discussion of software engineering techniques and shows how they can be applied in practical software projects. This book features new coverage of the software process and software process technology, system integration, requirements management, and risk analysis, as well as new chapters on pattern-based reuse, distributed system engineering, and legacy systems. Sommerville has incorporated a more object-oriented approach in this edition—using UML and Java—and has removed much of the material on CASE, formal methods, and Ada, making the book more in tune with current technology and practice. A new discussion of professional ethics in the introduction helps to make readers aware of the responsibilities that come with engineering software. The sixth edition uses Java for all programming examples, and bases all design examples on UML notation. It includes new chapters on pattern-based reuse, distributed system engineering, and legacy systems, as well as new coverage of the software process and software process technology, system integration, requirements management, and risk analysis. This book is designed for readers needing a general introduction to software engineering (development, management, and evolution), especially with regard to system requirements engineering and critical systems.

Final Cut Pro 3 and the Art of Filmmaking
Jason Cranford Teague, David Teague Since the cost of entry into the world of filmmaking has plummeted with the introduction of such technologies as the DV camera, Apple's FireWire protocol, and the ever-increasing speed of desktop computers, there are more people than ever creating high-quality independent films. Final Cut Pro 3 and the Art of Filmmaking teaches these new filmmakers the necessary, basic skills for polishing their elementary work.

The authors begin their approach with an introduction to the necessary hardware and software, installing Final Cut Pro, and a tour of the interface. They focus on editing and adding transitions, then take a look at adding titles and filters. You'll learn about compositing, keying, and using Final Cut Pro's motion controls, as well as fine-tuning audio tracks. The last part of their book discusses what to do with your film after the editing is done: compressing for DVDs and the Web, archiving the project, and printing to video.

It's worth noting that this book does not come with a CD-ROM. The authors have included instead a DVD full of project files, raw footage, and a short but complete documentary. This offers an editor the excellent opportunity to look over the shoulder of a working professional, discovering how and why something is cut the way it is. The DVD also contains the project files and source clips needed for most of the chapters throughout the book, giving the reader a chance to work along with each chapter using the very same footage.

Final Cut Pro 3 and the Art of Filmmaking offers a sound introduction to editing in general and using Final Cut Pro in particular. Each chapter is well illustrated and written, and almost every feature of Final Cut Pro is explained. While this book lacks the depth sought by more advanced users, it presents a friendly and informative approach for the new one. Through a tutorial-based approach and supplied material, the features of this powerful editing tool become accessible and familiar, making this book a worthy asset to any beginning Final Cut Pro editor. —Mike Caputo

Flash 4 for Windows & Macintosh
Katherine Ulrich Flash is a great name for an application; who wouldn't want to add flash to their designs? In practice, Macromedia Flash 4 is a complex set of tools for creating animated and interactive graphics that can be played within most up-to-date Web browsers. Flash 4 Visual QuickStart Guide is a well-paced, thorough introduction to all that this powerful application has to offer.

The book begins by introducing the editing environment, including the toolbar, inspectors, menus, and timeline. From there it explains how to create and manipulate objects (graphics) and how to convert them into symbols (Flash's term for oft-used images) that can be stored in libraries.

It covers simple and complex animations, including ones with interactivity—from rollovers to movies with sound and conditional actions. Readers learn how to create frame-by-frame animations, use motion and shape tweening, optimize movies for playback on the Web, and many other key features of Flash.

As with all Visual QuickStart Guides, Flash 4 uses a column of text side by side with screen shots for every step. Readers can set their own pace by reading all of the text, just the steps, or just the illustrations and captions. Skipping ahead or reading the book in a nonlinear fashion is easy since each section recaps any previous steps that may be necessary for that lesson.

Flash 4 is a cross-platform guide, but there are minimal differences between the Windows and Macintosh applications; illustrations are used from either one or the other, but only from both when the differences are significant. This keeps the book lean; readers familiar with how menus look on both platforms will find it very clear.

Flash may not be as complicated as Macromedia Director, but it's not simple either. Becoming fluent in the application will require a few days of study. But with Flash 4 Visual QuickStart Guide, new users can get some basic animations completed in a few hours: a little bit of flash in a little bit of time. —Angelynn Grant

Topics covered: using the editing environment, including the timeline, stage, toolbar, menus and keyboard shortcuts; creating and modifying objects, using layers, saving objects as symbols and using libraries; creating frame-by-frame animations, animations with motion and shape tweening; using masks, movie-clip symbols, interactivity with frame actions and buttons; adding sound to movies, complex interactivity, including conditional actions; preparing a movie for optimal playback on the Web, including Flash Player settings; and publishing HTML for Flash Player files.

Microsoft McSe Readiness Review: Exam 70-067 : Microsoft Windows Nt Server 4.0
Ethan Wilansky The idea behind MCSE Readiness Review: Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 is to determine your level of preparedness for Microsoft's Windows NT Server 4.0 exam (70-067), one of the tests you must pass en route to certification as a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE). Rather than attempt to teach the exam material, this book/CD-ROM package asks questions like those on the exam and provides answers to them. The questions—several hundred of them—cover all of Microsoft's stated goals for the exam.

This book's format facilitates efficient independent study. In each two-page spread, the right-hand page contains one or two problems and a choice of answers for each. The left-hand page contains answers to the questions posed on the preceding page, complete with a restatement of the questions and explanations of why the correct answers are correct. This means you can study a question without being tempted to glance at the answer or having to cover it up, and yet it's very easy to turn the page and check your response. Candidates who aren't familiar with the tested material can study the left-hand pages to increase their knowledge, though such people probably ought to supplement this book with a more in-depth tutorial. —David Wall

Robin Williams *Hmmmmm*

To the Mac faithful, that's the lovely sound of the system starting up — soon to be followed by the initial smiling computer icon. Unfortunately, as with many things in life, sometimes bad things happen. Expecting to receive a greeting from your familiar, cheerful icon, you hear chimes of doom and a frowning computer appears.

Have no fear! Ms. Robin Williams, expert Mac author, is here! The last chapter of The Little Mac Book quickly runs through possible scenarios as to why your machine would be unhappy. But reading The Little Mac Book is like taking preventive medicine. Williams spends the first 300+ pages of The Little Mac Book introducing readers to the fascinating inner workings of the Macintosh system. With a greater understanding of the Mac's files and folders, you may never come to meet either the Sad Mac or — more ominously — the Dead Mac.

With a style both chatty and informative, Williams has crafted a guide blissfully free of heavy-handed techno-garble. Instead, she provides a tour simple enough for the newest Mac owner and complete enough to teach experienced users a thing or two.
